Not long after Jane Godwin and I worked on our first book together Little Cat and the Big Red Bus, and launched it at a primary school in Eltham we talked about creating a story about starting school. Two books later we are happily awaiting the printed editions of Starting School to arrive in August. Each book journey is a special one and I have been waiting to share the path I travelled for this book with you.
It began when I met the children in the story. Jane had written an endearing sketch of the personalities of the five main children in our story, along with the wonderful text. I imagined almost instantly what the children would look like, but to remember again the feeling of the first days at school and what it is like to begin that adventure I spent some time at our local Primary School with the preps.
I had forgotten how wriggly the preps could be! It was a delight to watch their inquisitive, energetic and joyful natures in the classroom.
I played with colour
And painted lots of children - who looked like they were ready to hop in the bath!
I decided to cut out all the tiny uniforms and stick them on.
For a while I wondered if this was a sensible thing to do. The teeny tiny collars on the shirts and dresses took a very long time!
For a while everywhere I went I left tiny trails of cut paper.
It was very satisfying though when a child was dressed!
This is a peep at one of the spreads inside the book.I hope you come to know Tim, Hannah, Joe, Sunita and Polly. And enjoy their brave adventure as much as we did.
