Book Review
When you're a child, time is fluid. Weeks can feel like years and some days fell like they'll never arrive. The good stuff goes too fast, while the bad stuff never ends. But there's lots of good stuff by the local collaborative team behind
Little Cat and the Big Red Bus. Each double page is dedicated to a month: January has the family playing at the beach, the two older kids do cartwheels in the sand while mum and the little one rest under a green beach umbrella. February brings a nervous day at school, March is all about a backyard tumble, knee deep in golden leaves. A delightful tempo emerges when Godwin's gentle rhymes are read out loud, while Walker's watercolour illustrations not only capture the literal passing of time (keep an eye on the baby in January and see how he grows) but the 'feeling' of each new month, whether it's a crackling fire in June, a rainy day at the footy in September, or the smell of a freshly cut tree in December. Charming stuff for bedtime for readers three to six.
